SafeSport Is Selling Merchandise-???
Created by the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017 (Public Law 115–126), the U.S. Center for SafeSport has outlined its organization:
The U.S. Center for SafeSport is an independent nonprofit organization responsible for responding to and preventing emotional, physical, and sexual misconduct and abuse in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement. The Center also serves as an educational resource for sports organizations at all levels, from recreational sports organizations to professional leagues.
In recent months, the U.S. Center for SafeSport has faced significant criticism and controversy. This has highlighted systemic issues and raised concerns about its effectiveness in protecting athletes.
Here's a summary of the key issues:
Firing of CEO Ju'Riese Colón
Hiring of an Investigator with Criminal Charges
Slow Case Resolution
Lack of Transparency and Administrative Closures
Funding Concerns
Concerns from Athletes and Congress
Due Process Concerns
So on
To address the rising number of abuse reports and the effects of inflation, the SafeSport Center requires an additional $10 million each year, bringing its requested budget to $30 million. This prompted the US House to introduce the "Safer Sports for Athletes Act of 2024" (H.R. 10326) last December. As of today, it remains unconfirmed whether SafeSport has recently received any additional federal funds.
Suddenly, the Center announced its decision to sell merchandise and informed its supporters:
The Center has claimed that proceeds from each sale support our efforts to help athletes feel safe, supported, and empowered both on and off the court.
Is this type of organization legitimate in selling merchandise?
I hesitate to say, “Guess so,” because the Center receives funding from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), as mandated by Congress. The USOPC has also marketed merchandise.
However, I have wondered if the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which has primary jurisdiction over SafeSport matters, is aware of the Center’s latest offer.
Can you picture Senate Chairman Ted Cruz in the T-shirt below? Maybe Senator John Fetterman (PA) would be thrilled to wear it.
