Today is the last Monday of May, which is a federal holiday for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
“What does it mean to disclose the "memory"? Wrote my Minturno WWII tour guide, Mario Mirco Mendico, at the Minturno War Cemetery on May 17. "Continue to water the seed of peace planted in the hearts of others!"
Americans need to be educated on the difference between the two.
But…
Since shortly after World War II, Memorial Day has also been considered the unofficial beginning of summer. It provides many with a fun-filled three-day weekend, such as families BBQ on the grill, the local pool announcing its opening day, and retailers promoting big sales.
On May 24, 2024, the latest poll states that “57% of Americans are planning to celebrate Memorial Day weekend.”
The most popular ways to celebrate the holiday include gathering with family and friends (57%), grilling/barbecuing (52%), cooking/baking at home (29%), hosting others at home (17%), and attending public celebrations (13%).
13% will attend public celebrations-!!!!!!
Mendico and I have continued to preserve the history of my dad’s 337th Regiment in his hometown of Minturno. Presently, he is a delegate of the Municipality of Minturno, responsible for historical memory and housing/home policies.
"Memorial Day remains one of America's most cherished patriotic observances. The spirit of this day has not changed - it remains a day to honor those who died defending our freedom and democracy."- Retired Rep. Doc Hastings (WA-4th)
Thanks Howie
