CSUSOP's July Survey Does Not Mention Deaflympics!!!
This morning, Google News emailed me a new article mentioning the Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics and Paralympics (CSUSOP.)
The article, Costs to Play Trends, says, “SurveyUSA.com interviewed 1,000 adults on a range of questions.” This survey was for the CSUSOP.
It says the news release about this survey was July 27, 2023. That is what I didn’t know till this morning.
One of their studies analyzes the participation of disabled individuals in amateur athletics.
Now click this survey! See the results.
The topic of diversity is also an important one across multiple measures:
Question 32: 77% say it is important for USOPC [United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee) and for the National Governing Bodies for each sport to have diverse representation on their leadership boards, with 41% saying it is very important and 36% somewhat important. No fewer than ⅔ of adults in any demographic or regional group say diverse representation on leadership boards is important.
Question 33: 78% support including recent or current athletes in decision-making processes that can improve the governance and overall success of Olympic and Paralympic sports organizations and teams, with 36% strongly supporting and 42% somewhat supporting.
Question 34: 84% say it is important for sports to be made more accessible to those in underserved communities; 59% say that it is very important, 25% somewhat important. Majorities of virtually every demographic subgroup say this is very important.
Question 35: 85% say it is important to improve access for para-athletes, promote inclusion, and ensure that para-athletes have equitable opportunities to participate in sports at all levels.
Question 36: 48% say there is enough diversity and representation among the athletes participating at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic level; 31% say the athletes are not as diverse and representative as they could be. Very conservative adults (65%), Republicans (60%), and those with higher incomes (59%) are the most likely to say there is enough diversity and representation among the athletes; those who are somewhat liberal (51%), very liberal (47%), and African Americans (46%) are the most likely to say the athletes are not as diverse and representative as they could be.
Question 37: Despite that plurality saying there is enough diversity and representation, a strong majority, 78%, say it is important for sports organizations and teams to prioritize diversity and inclusion in their policies and practices to ensure equity in access, accessibility, and participation. 16% say that is not important, including 23% of 50-64 year-olds, very conservative adults, and upper-income respondents.
Okay, the article claims 1000 interviews. It is a very sharp contrast to what CSUSOP Co-Chair Dionne Koller told the Associated Press, “the commission has collected “tens of thousands of pages of documents,” and collected responses from more than 2,000 surveys from across the Olympic landscape.”
What happened to the other 1000 surveys? Did the CSUSOP throw them out because of negative responses?
The survey shows nothing about the Deaflypmpics.
I believe it was too late for the CSUSOP to ask questions about the Deaflympics.
Look at the below, posted on Instagram on February 25, 2023.
I know that the USOPC's Athletes' Advisory Council has no Deaflympians. The Salon article tells you more about that.
Therefore, I hope the CSUSOP will ask SurveyUSA.com to interview our forgotten Deaflympians.
