During my divorce, I lived in the Residences at Hanover Shoe, an apartment converted from the Hanover Shoe factory in Hanover, PA. As a teen, my daughter came to this place for her visitation with me and skated at the Magic Elm Skateland.
One day, her eyes widened, and she was shocked after looking at the egg custard dishes in my kitchen. She told me she loves eating egg custard, but her friends disliked this dessert.
It was accidental. What should you do with eggs before the expiration date? I always make egg custard.
At the end of the visit, she wanted me to make more custards for her next visit.
President Andrew Jackson’s favorite dessert was burnt custard, according to “Favorite Desserts of U.S. Presidents.”
Flashback: In 1987, my USA deaf tennis team participated in the 1987 Edition of the Dresse Cup for Deaf Men and the Maere Cup for Deaf Women in Pau, France. This event allowed all national teams to share the large dining room to eat. On one night, the dessert happened to be burnt custard! I noticed that most American players decided not to eat the dessert. Then I decided to stay longer in that room and ate custards from their dishes. Very delicious!
Here is my mother’s recipe!
